Charles Edwards, Scared Heart Church, Savannah, GA

Known as Mr. Charles by thousands of students and parishioners, Charles began working for Sacred Heart School as a custodian in 1947 when the school was located on Abercorn & 38th street. He also worked part-time at Sacred Heart Church, He continued working for the school until it closed in 1989. A very humble man.

Bishop J. Kevin Boland confered the Gartland Award on 70 recipients at a Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on November 21, the Feast of Christ the King.

Named for Francis X. Gartland, the first Bishop of Savannah, the award is given for distinguished service to the Catholic Church in South Georgia. The award was instituted in 2000 with the 150th anniversary of the Diocese of Savannah.
